Creating a Large Painting from Small Studies
In this workshop, Bethanne Cople will help you explore how to use studies to create a larger studio painting.  Using the fundamentals of a good painting…strong composition, values, color, hard and soft edges, a definite focal point…we will construct a large, new painting using elements from students’ small works.  Students should bring one or several studies they have painted in the past as reference.  Students should bring a canvas larger than the studies, but still able to sit comfortably on their portable easel. Studio canvas need not be the same proportion as the study, i.e. a 6×8 need not be worked up to an 18×24, it can be 12×24, 16×20… anything. Please note supply list below. No cotton canvas. You may have stretched linen, linen on board or gesso board, as long as it fits on your easel.

About Bethanne Kinsella Cople:
Bethanne’s plein air landscape paintings are known for their lush painterly quality. Loosely painted yet realistic, they have a timeless appeal. Using expressive brushwork and a finely honed sense of color, she creates a powerful image with both depth and beauty.
Over the course of her career Bethanne has received many honors. . Most recently, she received the “Award of Excellence” at the Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters annual exhibit, Jackson Hole, Wyoming; the “Dick Bell Bookmaven” Award of Excellence, American Impressionist Society, Annual National Exhibit, Tennessee; “People’s Choice Award”, at the Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Art Club, New York, New York exhibition; and twice won “Best Pastoral”, at the Plein Air-Easton Invitational Paintouts, Easton, Maryland. She also received “Honorable Mention” at the Eleventh and Fifteenth Annual Invitational Paintouts, Carmel, California; and “Best Traditional Painting,” 107th and 113thAnnual Catherine Lorillard Wolfe Open Exhibition, National Arts Club, New York City. She was also honored to have her painting “White Barn, Cool River” on the set of the USA TV series, “Necessary Roughness”, and in the major motion picture “Vice” as “an artist to watch” by Southwest Art Magazine landscape edition. Bethanne has served two terms as President of American Women Artists and Board member and is on the Board of The Rocky Mountain Plein Air Painters.

Materials list:
Good quality supplies are essential…. always buy the best quality you can afford. GAMBLIN is a good quality paint that is not too expensive. Please do not buy student grade paints…they do not have the pigment strength needed for mixing beautiful colors.

Oil Paint
Cadmium red light
cadmium yellow light
cadmium lemon
Gamblin gold ochre (or yellow ochre but I prefer gold ochre)
Alizarin crimson
burnt sienna
French ultramarine
cerulean
viridian
titanium white
Chromatic Black (from Gamblin)
You may bring any other colors you feel comfortable with. I love some of the radiant colors from Gamblin … especially radiant red. Please don’t bring stretched cotton canvas or cotton on board. The paint does not handle well on this surface and can be very frustrating. Instead you can buy linen on board or stretched, or you can gesso your own Masonite boards or buy ampersand gesso boards. If you have any questions about this you may email me… pleinair1@comcast.net.

Brushes and supplies
REAL Hog bristle brushes (synthetic brushes don’t work well) you only need a couple. I prefer flats. Sizes 6,8,10
Palette knives for painting…. these are angled or offset. Have at least one that is rectangular. Pleinair easel or steady portable easel…. we will be indoors, odorless mineral spirits (I prefer Gamsol) and jar, baby wipes.
